Wim Vanderbauwhede is a professor of Computer Science at the University of Glasgow, where he leads the Sustainable and Low-Carbon Computing research group. He has written about the high energy consumption of large generative AI models such as ChatGPT, whose expansion, as currently envisaged, he believes “we cannot afford”. Recently, he has expressed scepticism about the idea that advances in efficiency could lead to a reduction in emissions from this industry. We interview him.
