The Destruction of Reason and the Rise of Ecofascism in the United States

The planetary ecological crisis is a manifestation of the death drive of late imperialism, whereby the expanded reproduction of monopoly-finance capital depends on the destruction of the conditions of life. As the absolute limits of capital are reached, generating a structural crisis, the capitalist state has become more authoritarian, giving rise to ecofascism as a virulent manifestation of the neofascism embodied in the Donald Trump administration. In this age of unreason, the ecological crisis that capital has created is fervently denied. Instead, the ecofascist response has entailed a heightened struggle for domination, resource control, hypernationalism, oppression of peoples, anti-immigration, racism, and the annihilation of ecology—all in the interest of capital accumulation. More than a mere oxymoron, ecofascism is the ecology of exterminism.
